Family photographs
It is widely accepted that photo albums provide an accurate recorded history about family. It is accepted that they offer unique and intimate insights into relationships and it is true that photographs have the power to conjure up memories of the past.
A study conducted in the 1960’s however, found that two thirds of amateur photographers take the snaps at predictable times such as at ceremonies, meetings and holidays. Seldom are photos’ an accurate depiction of reality with family image, not family history being the focus. The compulsive smiles in modern family photos only serves to perpetuate the myth of the ‘rose garden family’.
Generally, celebrations and rituals are recorded but work, divorces and funerals are not.
